Fifa Laopakdee's second straight Asia-Pacific Amateur title on Sunday sent him back to Augusta National and filled the sixth amateur spot in the 2027 Masters field. One amateur invitation is still open, and it goes to the winner of the Latin America Amateur in January.
Each invitation carries one condition: the player has to still be an amateur when the Masters is played. Michael La Sasso won the 2025 NCAA individual title, then turned pro and signed with LIV Golf before the 2026 Masters, and his invitation went away with his amateur status.
The six amateurs with 2027 Masters invitations, in the order they earned them
- Preston Stout, Oklahoma State, NCAA champion. Stout won the NCAA individual title at La Costa in June at 14 under, one shot ahead of William Jennings. Golfweek lists him as the No. 1 amateur in the world.
- Stuart Grehan, Ireland, The Amateur Championship. Grehan is a 33-year-old reinstated amateur, and he won the British Amateur at Royal Liverpool in June.
- Jack Whaley, Florida State, U.S. Amateur champion. Whaley beat Jay Leng Jr. 4 and 3 in the final at Merion and became the first Seminole to win the U.S. Amateur. The title also got him into the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and The Open at St Andrews.
- Jay Leng Jr., Stanford, U.S. Amateur runner-up. The Masters invites the U.S. Amateur runner-up too, so losing that final still got Leng a tee time. Golfweek notes he had already won the Western Amateur and made the U.S. Walker Cup team.
- Andrew Bailey, Cleveland, U.S. Mid-Amateur champion. Bailey, 34, beat Nate Smith 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final on The Lido at Sand Valley on Oct. 1, the first Ohioan to win the Mid-Am. He sells golf apparel for Holderness & Bourne for a living. "I've got to talk to the bosses about PTO," he said after the win.
- Fifa Laopakdee, Thailand, Asia-Pacific Amateur champion. Laopakdee defended his title at Te Arai Links in New Zealand. Golfweek says he and Hideki Matsuyama are the only players to win the event in back-to-back years, and that 2027 will be his second Masters. The win also gets him into The Open at St Andrews.
The Masters' 2027 qualification list confirms each route: the U.S. Amateur champion and runner-up, The Amateur champion, and the current Asia-Pacific Amateur, Latin America Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur and NCAA Division I men's individual champions.
