The PGA Tour’s fall season now doubles as an audition for its 2028 split

The PGA Tour returns this week with more at stake than a quiet restart after the FedExCup playoffs. The inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville opens the eight-event fall season, and the players chasing status now have a clearer picture of the system waiting for them in 2028.

Golf Digest’s fall preview points to Jordan Spieth, Jackson Koivun and the fight for position inside the FedExCup standings. Koivun is the immediate draw. The 21-year-old won the 3M Open in his third professional start and will use Biltmore as his final tournament before making his Presidents Cup debut.

The field at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove also includes U.S. teammate Jacob Bridgeman and five International Team players. Justin Thomas withdrew, but the event still gives several Presidents Cup selections competitive work one week before Medinah. For players outside that group, the fall has a harder edge: the top 100 in the standings retain full status for 2027, while the top 60 earn entry into two early-season signature events.

Those familiar fall races now lead into a much larger change. The Tour confirmed Tuesday that its 2028 Championship Series will retain the top 90 players and promote the top 20 from the Challenger Series. A player can also earn promotion by winning twice on the Challenger Series. Championship Series winners receive membership for the current season and the following two seasons.

The transition begins next year. The top 95 in the 2027 season standings will move into the first Championship Series, while the top 10 on the 2027 Korn Ferry Tour points list will go directly to the top level. The next 30 available Korn Ferry players will enter the Challenger Series. That makes 2026 status more valuable than a one-year card: exemptions earned through the end of this season will be honored in the new structure.

The result is a fall schedule with two timelines. Koivun, Bridgeman and the Presidents Cup players are preparing for next week. Spieth and the rest of the field are trying to improve their 2027 access. Behind both groups is the 2028 split, when falling outside the top 90 will carry the possibility of relegation instead of a simple reshuffling of priority.

Biltmore is the first useful look at who is ready for that pressure. The golf still decides the story, but the Tour has now attached a much clearer consequence to every place on the leaderboard.
