Course spotlight: all three El Cardonal champions closed with a Sunday 63

The PGA Tour moves to Tiger Woods' first finished design for the World Wide Technology Championship, Nov. 5-8. Van Rooyen, Eckroat and Griffin each won there with a final-round 63, and Griffin's 29 under is the number to beat.

  • The PGA Tour has played El Cardonal at Diamante three times, and the winner has shot 63 in the final round every time. Erik van Rooyen did it in 2023, Austin Eckroat in 2024 and Ben Griffin last year. The World Wide Technology Championship returns to the Tiger Woods design in Los Cabos on Thursday, Nov. 5, with Griffin defending.

The event is the sixth of eight FedEx Cup Fall stops, so for a lot of the 120-man field this week is about 2027 status as much as the $1.08 million winner's check from a $6 million purse.

    Tiger's first finished course

El Cardonal opened in 2014. It was the first course TGR Design completed, after earlier Woods projects stalled in the financial crisis, and in 2023 it became the first Woods design to host a PGA Tour event. It plays 7,452 yards at par 72.

  • The site is big and steep. According to the PGA Tour's course guide, the land falls 240 feet over the mile from the 17th tee to the third fairway, on a steady 4% grade, and the area gets about 6 inches of rain a year, so the paspalum usually plays firm and fast. Fairways are wide. In the first year Adam Long hit every one of them for the week. Trouble comes from the sandy arroyos running beside the holes and from wind that can switch direction from one day to the next.

    Three Sundays, three 63s

    • 2023, Erik van Rooyen (27 under). He played the back nine in 28 and holed a 16-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to beat Matt Kuchar and Camilo Villegas by two. Kuchar had been six ahead during Saturday's round before a quadruple-bogey 8 at the 15th.
    • 2024, Austin Eckroat (24 under). He made 11 birdies in his closing 63 and won by one over Justin Lower and Carson Young. Eckroat calls Woods his idol.
    • 2025, Ben Griffin (29 under). His 63 gave him a two-shot win over Chad Ramey and Sami Valimaki and capped a three-win season. The 29 under is the tournament scoring record.

Van Rooyen and Eckroat both started the final round one shot behind. Every winner here has had to go low on Sunday.

    Who is coming

Griffin leads a field that includes Ryan Gerard, No. 23 in the world and the highest-ranked player entered, Tony Finau on his eighth start in the event, and rookie Jackson Koivun, who won this summer in his third career start. Luke Donald, the tournament's ambassador, is back for a third straight year. Past champions Patton Kizzire, Matt Kuchar, Brendon Todd, van Rooyen and Eckroat are also committed.

  • Golfweek also lists 19-year-old Blades Brown, Ben James, Jay Leng and Preston Stout, the world's top-ranked amateur, who earned his spot by winning the Cabo Collegiate.

This is also the 20th edition of the tournament, which started in the Riviera Maya in 2007 and moved to Los Cabos in 2023.
