GolfBusters' $1,000 bet against Mr. ShortGame comes down to a chip-off

GolfBusters bet Mr. ShortGame $1,000 he couldn't back up his plus-one handicap over nine holes. He led late, made a triple bogey on the eighth and lost a chip-off, but they still called his handicap legit.

  • GolfBusters' Ryan Links and Jock Buffton challenged longtime YouTube golfer Mr. ShortGame to prove his handicap in Episode 7 of their Hometown Haters series, posted Tuesday. The nine-hole match at Quail Ridge Golf Club went to a chip-off, and Mr. ShortGame lost it.

  • The bet

Mr. ShortGame says he's a plus-one. GolfBusters, who say they average one under for nine holes as a team, offered $1,000 and three strokes. He could win the money by beating them in the match or by shooting plus-two (38) or better on his own ball. He turned down a breakfast ball on the first tee.

GolfBusters didn't make it easy on themselves. Ryan hit a hosel rocket on the first hole and then found out he'd left his putter on the practice green, so the team scrambled for a par before it came back.

  • How it swung

Mr. ShortGame was in control most of the way. Late in the round the hosts said he could go bogey-bogey and still shoot 38, and on the eighth he said he was still three up. One bad hole changed it. He made a triple bogey on the eighth, and the match went to the ninth all square.

Both sides gave themselves chances on nine. Mr. ShortGame had a 21-footer that GolfBusters worried about, but they finished all square through nine holes.

    The chip-off

Mr. ShortGame picked the spot, a tricky one with a tree in the way. Ryan punched a seven-iron off his back foot, and Jock hit one GolfBusters called really good. Mr. ShortGame went low with a 60-degree wedge, clipped a branch and couldn't beat them. "Good job, gentlemen," he said.

  • The verdict on the handicap still went his way. "I think the plus one's 100% legit," one host said. The other added that if you took out the eighth hole, it was incredible golf.

    What to watch

He stayed to film GolfBusters' Driver Gauntlet and Driver vs. the Back series, so look for more of Mr. ShortGame on their channel. For sim golfers, the takeaway works on any course: play their format with a buddy, giving three strokes against a two-over target, and see whose number holds up.
