The Nexo Championship ran August 20-23 at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Daly II, the son of two-time major champion John Daly, played on a tournament invite. He turned professional in June and had made two Korn Ferry Tour starts before that week, according to the DP World Tour.

He opened with a level-par 72 alongside Andy Sullivan and Daniel Brown. The tour's first-round report has him birdieing the first, giving the shot back after a penalty at the second, then birdieing the par-3 sixth. A double bogey at the par-5 10th followed, then seven straight pars before an up-and-down birdie at the 18th.

  • "I'm very proud of my short game, that's for sure," he said after the round. He also said the fescue made the windy early holes "a little daunting."

    How the week finished

A second-round 77 followed, and he made the cut. Weekend rounds of 70 and 69 brought him to 288, level par and tied for 30th, per the official results, which list his share of the prize money at €20,899.64. Scott Jamieson won at 11 under.

In early September he missed the cut at the Omega European Masters after rounds of 69 and 73.

  • The Mexico Open start

The PGA Tour's preview calls this his second PGA Tour start of the season, after he finished T37 at the Puerto Rico Open in March. That was before he turned pro, so Vallarta is his first PGA Tour start as a professional. Ryder Cowan and Kihei Akina are among the other sponsor invitees.

    What to watch

If you play links layouts on your simulator, the every-shot cut is worth the 15 minutes: a tour rookie working through wind and fescue one swing at a time. Then check the Mexico Open leaderboard Thursday to see whether the 70-69 weekend from Scotland carries into Vallarta.
