International sweep at Medinah puts Presidents Cup course decisions in focus

A 5-0 Friday foursomes session turned a 3-2 U.S. lead into a 7-3 International edge; Trackman's virtual Medinah offers a way to study the same renovated holes.

  • The International Team won all five Friday foursomes matches at Medinah Country Club and took a 7-3 lead into Saturday's Presidents Cup sessions. That is a five-point swing from Thursday's 3-2 U.S. advantage. The PGA Tour's session recap records the sweep and individual outcomes; Saturday brings morning four-ball and afternoon foursomes before Sunday's singles. The Cup has not been decided.

The narrowest Friday result came in the opening matchup. Corey Conners and Nick Taylor defeated Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns 1-up. Taylor's approach on the 18th finished a little over two feet from the hole, and the Canadian pair held its one-hole lead. Elsewhere, Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama beat Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman 3 and 2. Adam Scott and Christiaan Bezuidenhout beat Justin Thomas and Cameron Young by the same margin. Ryan Fox and Min Woo Lee turned a late deficit into a 1-up win over Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark; Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim closed the session with a 4-and-3 victory over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Those results come from the Tour's Friday reporting, rather than a replayed scoreboard graphic.

For simulator golfers, the setting is unusually accessible to study. Trackman's Medinah No. 3 course guide says the renovated course is available in Trackman Virtual Golf. International captain Geoff Ogilvy worked with the OCM design team on the renovation, according to Trackman. The guide describes wider landing areas, fewer trees and diagonal water hazards that let a player choose how much risk to take. It specifically points to the fifth hole's left-side trouble and the 16th hole's water carry as decisions that can be tested in the virtual version. Those are the developer's course descriptions, not an independent measurement of simulator-to-course accuracy.

  • That design context adds a practical viewing question for Saturday: where do the pairs choose to take on a hazard, and where do they accept a longer next shot? Friday's sweep does not prove one simulator line is the winning line in live competition. It does make Medinah's choices worth watching as the captains reset their pairings. The Tour's Saturday pairing preview has Justin Thomas and Jackson Koivun against Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im first in morning four-ball, with the same Kim pair back against Morikawa and Clark in the second match. The scoreboard can move quickly across two sessions; Friday's 7-3 mark is the starting point, not the final word.
