Shane Lowry is joining Rory McIlroy at Boston Common Golf after the first trade in TGL history. Boston announced Monday that it had acquired the 2019 Open champion from The Bay Golf Club ahead of the indoor league’s third season.
The deal gives McIlroy a familiar teammate as TGL expands its rosters from four players to five. Lowry and McIlroy won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans together and have been European Ryder Cup teammates. Boston’s announcement says its full roster will follow in the coming days.
The cost involves roster-building rights as well as commercial terms. In its October 19 explanation of the 2027 roster process, TGL says The Bay receives Boston’s fourth-round selection for this offseason, the right to swap one selection position with Boston during one of the next three offseasons, and commercial considerations.

That is a more specific description of the future element than the team announcement’s reference to a future selection. The published league explanation describes a swap of selection position. The announcements do not put a dollar value on the commercial part of the deal.
Sports Business Journal’s Josh Carpenter reported the move Monday morning. His original post identifies the fourth position in the coming roster-formation process as the immediate selection asset changing hands.
Five on the roster, three in a match
The extra roster place changes the pool of players a team can choose from, while the match lineup remains three golfers. TGL says final five-player rosters will be confirmed Tuesday, October 20. Until then, the Lowry deal establishes one addition rather than a complete Boston lineup.
Motor City Golf Club is also joining as the seventh team. Brooks Koepka and Jackson Koivun are among its first players, adding another roster to the selection process as the existing clubs fill their fifth positions.
Boston has already shown how quickly a TGL season can turn. Golf Digest’s Alex Myers notes that the club went from last place in the inaugural season to the top of the 2026 regular-season standings, before losing to Jupiter Links Golf Club in the semifinals.
Lowry brings another player with substantial team experience. Alongside the Zurich victory with McIlroy, he helped Europe win the Ryder Cup in 2023 and retain it in 2025. In Boston’s statement, McIlroy welcomed the chance to play alongside a friend whose competitiveness he already knows.
The third TGL season begins December 27 at SoFi Center. The immediate next step is Tuesday’s roster announcement, which will show how the Lowry trade fits Boston’s complete five-player group.
